A Royal

King Triton
I’ve been watching you, early mornings, sandy feet, “just one more wave.” You feel it. So consider this your royal decree: The 48th Annual San Clemente Ocean Festival is back, and it’s your turn to paddle out.
Not just for the pros. For anyone ready to try.
Two days of competition, surfing, junior guard pride and this year, the new Pier Bowl Surf Classic beside the San Clemente Pier. If you’ve ever said “maybe next year”… this is your year. Out here, legends aren’t born, they paddle out.
Registration is now open.

Dear Locals,

The Vision
Continue the success of the “Greatest Show On Surf” by attracting world class athletes, local residents and visitors to participate in a family oriented beach experience while maintaining a strong network of volunteers and sponsors, ensuring the long term viability of the San Clemente Ocean Festival.
Our Mission
San Clemente Ocean Festival is a volunteer organization, dedicated to the promotion and support of ocean safety, the environment and the community by providing a quality athletic venue and enjoyable family event.

A History
In 1976, Sheridan Byerly, a Marine Safety Captain for San Clemente Lifeguards, wanted to increase participation in the Orange County Beach Games, which up to this point only drew lifeguards from the local area. Captain Byerly’s hope was to increase the involvement in the games and include the general public in hopes to engage lifeguards and families in fun activities on the beach.
Over the next year the Orange County Beach Games grew into the San Clemente Ocean Festival with the help of publicist Dorothy Fuller. Dorothy, who will always be remembered as ‘The Mother of the Ocean Festival’, developed the slogan, “The Greatest Show on Surf” in 1981 and trademarked the King Neptune event logo in 1983. The San Clemente Ocean Festival is organized and run by a board of talented volunteer directors and hundreds of community volunteers who provide the manpower during the two-day event.
Despite the phenomenal growth the event has experienced over the past three decades, the San Clemente Ocean Festival remains a family oriented event with a wholesome atmosphere for families to enjoy as either spectators or participants. Today, the event attracts nearly 50,000 people annually from Orange, San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, in addition to visitors from as far as Hawaii and Australia.
As a 501(c)4 non-profit organization, the San Clemente Ocean Festival has provided support to many local groups and organizations including San Clemente Lifeguards and Pier Pride, plus scholarships for San Clemente's Junior Lifeguard programs, Aquatic scholarships for programs offered through the City of San Clemente’s Beaches, Parks & Recreation Division, and the Ocean Institute’s Adopt-A-Class program that benefits local students. In addition, scholarships have been awarded to graduating high school students. Emphasis is on marine safety, service and education.

Grants and Scholarships
Our non-profit organization has been able to give back to the community since 1993.
The generosity and support of our sponsors along with the revenue earned from merchandise sales, entry fees for athletic competitions, and proceeds from the Great Rubber Duck Race, have enabled the Ocean Festival to provide financial support for many worthwhile organizations in our community. Some of these organizations include:
San Clemente Junior Lifeguard Program
San Clemente and State Lifeguards
Ocean Institute's Adopt-A-Class program
City of San Clemente Aquatics programs
Meals on Wheels
Boys & Girls Club Scholarships for San Clemente high school graduates.
Donation requests are generally accepted in the fall, reviewed and approved by early November and distributed in December. Scholarship requests come directly from the high school and are reviewed by our committee each spring.
